New KDX-M Review From James

01 Jun 2007

I have owned the KDX-M's for about 2 years now. I have them as front and surround speakers and also have the matching centre speaker, the KDX-C.

When I was initially piecing my home theatre system together, I ultimately wanted some larger floor standing speakers as main fronts, but the cost of a quality pair (like Krix's) was going to be stretching it just a bit far. But, after I spent hours listening to both music and movies on the KDX's, I have come to the conclusion that size doesn't matter (unless you are talking about those pricey, plastic sub/sat systems that are all the rage now). These little beasts are plenty powerful for the average lounge room. They play loud enough for the wildest parties and the superb sound doesn't deteriorate at high volume levels. Movies have taken on a whole new dimension, it does not seem to matter that I only have a 48cm TV!

I'm no golden eared audiophile, so I don't really know how to describe the sound (read an industry review for that) but I can tell you that it beats anything else I have listened to in this price range. Simply put, it is clear, clean and complete.

About a year ago I added a subwoofer (a Seismix 3 mK3) to the works, but owning one is by no means essential, there is no lack of bass from these little babies on their own (they will probably struggle in this respect in a bigger room).

The thing I like most about these speakers is their build quality - they feature very nice timber veneer and when you pick them up they feel like they have some substance to them (they're heavy). Things like the speaker terminals are all of a high quality. The drivers themselves appear very durable - rubber edges instead of foam, doped paper as opposed to untreated paper - that sort of jazz. One of my speaker grilles has never fitted properly, but apart from that I really can't fault the construction. Best of all, they are made in Adelaide - so my money at least went to someone local and not straight to China.

Very impressed overall. Highly recommended.
