New Epicentrix Review From Scott Walker
14 May 2007
The EPI arrived on Wednesday afternoon at 2.17pm (not that I was watching the clock). Les Duck delivered it and it took both of us to carry the box inside. Even though I anticipated how heavy the speaker would be, it still came as a bit of a shock! This may sound strange, but I have always believed you can tell a lot about a company and the quality of a speaker by the way it's packed! The EPI is the best packed centre I have seen.
Carefully, I managed to get the monster out of it's box. I didn't connect it right away, instead I just stared at it for about half an hour, just checking out how well it was built. When I finally got around to picking it up (which as you know was no easy thing to do), I put it onto the stand that I built about two years ago. I have used this stand for all of my centre speakers and I always thought it was well built, but as I lowered the Epi down I heard a 'crack' and the top of the stand had broken (this could only happen to me). It had given way under the weight of the EPI. After a new top was put on the stand, and knowing this time it would be ok, I placed the EPI on it. All is well, now!
I then made sure it was the right hight for when the motorized screen was down and then proceeded to run in the EPI for about 48 hours. So finally on Friday night, Liz and I watched a few movies. The movies where chosen for not only action but also for dialogue. We watched the new Casino Royale, Night at the Museum, and Star Wars: A New Hope. The music I listened to was by Alfred Brendel - (F. Schubert Improptu No 3 in G flat), Jan Gararek - (In Praise Of Dreams ), Dave Stewart - (Make The Devil Made), and Cassandra Wilson - (Right Here Right Now). The EPI just loves female voices!
The only word that came to mind (and I hate using it) was "awesome". I could not believe the sheer power! It was like I had added another subwoofer, but it was the "midrange", the dialogue was crisp, and crystal clear. There was also no gap between the centre and the right and left main speakers, and no hint of fatiguing. I know I am a bit biased towards Krix but, honestly, for sheer power and crystal clear midrange the Epicentrix is the best centre speakerĀ I have ever owned.
Krix never stops amazing me, with the outstanding products that just keeps renewing my passion for sound and the love for movies and music. I am now planning and dreaming of my next purchase.
